During her 20 year career as an international performing artist, Alison Marae has performed as a dancer/choreographer with contemporary dance companies, musicals and with independent choreographers, as well as her own work where she has created 15 full length, choreographed works for the stage.
Her movement aesthetic is inspired by the human element, incorporating release and breath techniques, vocals, poetry, theatre, partnering, improvisation and contemporary dance and ballet techniques.
She has trained extensively in and works professionally in/with contemporary/modern dance, partnering, contact improvisation, contemporary release technique, breath work with movement. She has trained extensively in particular somatic techniques created by Horton, Luigi, Alexander, Pilates, Skinner Release and Yoga. Her dance training also includes West African dance, tap dance (rhythm and Broadway) capoeira, ballet, jazz, modern/contemporary dance, hip hop, swing and musical theatre. She holds an associate of the arts degree in dance.
As a teaching artist she has taught for her own programs in studios, for outreach arts education in public schools and worked as staff for professional dance and music studios throughout San Diego for over 18 years. Alison ran her own non profit dance company for 9 years and served as the artistic and executive director for it’s professional company and pre-professional program, master teacher for programs and classes. Alison teaches modern dance, ballet, tap, jazz, musical theatre, a specialized movement curriculum for young children and holistic movement/sound based workshops for adults.
